Vilmoš Kujan – Right Winger of DMKS Turul and Slavija Novi Bečej

Vilmoš Kujan, born in Novi Bečej, moved to Novi Sad as a boy to learn a trade, where he stayed until 1942. During his time in Novi Sad, he played football, which made him one of the top players in Novi Bečej upon his return. In DMKS Turul, during the early war years, he quickly established himself as one of the team’s most important first-team players, alongside István Berta.

Kujan was a highly intelligent and rational player, combining natural skill with excellent game sense. He rarely chased the ball in vain and almost never lost control when in possession. Playing as a right winger, he is considered one of the finest the town had ever seen. His signature runs along the touchline and precise crosses toward Berta frequently led to goals, making him a key creator of Turul’s attacks. Many observers have noted that his crosses reminded them of those of the celebrated Yugoslav international Dragan Džajić.

After the liberation, Kujan continued his career with the post-war club Slavija Novi Bečej. Thanks to him and other standout players, this team became one of the strongest in Novi Bečej’s history, defeating the representative team of Zrenjanin 3–1 in Zrenjanin and claiming the Northern Banat championship in 1945.

Vilmoš Kujan was loved as a player and respected as a man, leaving a lasting legacy in Novi Bečej football during both wartime and post-war years.
