Šandor Kiš was one of the rare true football stalwarts of his generation. A hardworking and exceptionally combative half-back, he left a strong mark with Turul, and after the Second World War he also played for Zvezda.
As a player, Šanji was beloved by younger generations and deeply respected by the older citizens of Novi Bečej. Selfishness had no place in his game—every ounce of his effort was devoted to the team as a whole. Perhaps this is precisely why he never stood out as an individual star. He did not seek personal glory, but played simply, modestly and tirelessly, always focused on the success of his team.
He was characterized by remarkable consistency. There were no fluctuations in his performances, no dramatic rises or falls in form. A reliable builder of his team’s play, he was even more effective at breaking up opponents’ attacks. Although he appeared somewhat slower, he always arrived where he was needed. This apparent lack of speed was largely an illusion, caused by his long strides and distinctive running style, with his body leaning forward more than that of other players. Even if some slowness existed, it was insignificant compared to his ninety minutes of relentless effort across the entire pitch.
In addition to football, Šandor Kiš was for many years the best table tennis player in Novi Bečej. He brought the same energy, determination and unbreakable will into this sport as well. With a proper mentor, he could have achieved major success, as he approached table tennis—like everything else in life—with seriousness, calmness and discipline, qualities of particular importance in this demanding sport.
After ending his active playing career, he remained closely involved in football up to the present day. For several years he served as coach or technical leader of the first team of Jedinstvo. His work with youth players produced a number of talented footballers who later became first-team players not only for Jedinstvo, but also for second-division and even first-division clubs.
Known as a fair-minded and open individual, he stands firmly by his beliefs, yet is also capable of stepping back when he realizes he is not in the right. Few former footballers, like Šanji, command such attentive respect when they speak, and few have offered such selfless and sincere support to all generations of sports activists and players in Novi Bečej.
