Béla Farkaš – A Talented Footballer of Novi Bečej’s Wartime Generation

Béla Farkaš belonged to the generation of footballers who matured during the difficult years of the Second World War, yet through his talent and character he left a lasting mark on the history of football in Novi Bečej. He inherited his footballing ability from his father Géza Farkaš, a distinguished pre-war player of Građanski, but Béla’s natural gift and football intelligence placed him among the most promising players of his generation.

Slightly taller than his father, Béla was of a slender build, yet remarkably resilient and enduring. At just sixteen years of age, he broke into the first team of DMKS Turul, a club founded in the summer of 1941, and immediately became a regular and indispensable member of the squad. Although Turul was generally weaker than most of its Banat rivals, Béla quickly established himself as one of the team’s key players.

He was a calm, intelligent, and highly rational footballer. Thanks to his talent and excellent vision of the game, he solved even the most complex situations on the pitch with minimal effort. As a central figure in Turul’s lineup, he played a crucial role both in organizing the defense and initiating attacks. During the 1942 and 1943 seasons of the Banat Hungarian League, he was among the pillars of the team, especially in local derby matches against Zvezda, where Turul’s players compensated for the difference in quality with exceptional fighting spirit.

In Turul’s most frequent lineup—alongside players such as Ferenc Kiš, Vilmos Farkaš, László Gomba, Sándor Kiš, Vilmos Kujan, and István Berta—Béla Farkaš stood out as one of the most talented young footballers. Known for his gentle temperament, he was never prone to conflicts on the field. His style of play was fair, composed, and sportsmanlike, reflecting both his personality and his respect for the game.

After the war and the dissolution of Turul, Béla continued his football career with the newly established club Slavija from Novi Bečej. In 1945, he became a standard first-team player of the side that won the championship of Northern Banat, defeating the representative team of Zrenjanin 3–1 in Zrenjanin. Following this success, Béla was selected for the Northern Banat representative team, which played against Sloga of Pančevo, the champions of Southern Banat.

Despite the promising trajectory of his football career, Béla Farkaš devoted himself equally to his professional life outside sport. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and spent his entire, unfortunately short, life working as a physician at the Health Center in Novi Bečej. In this way, he remained remembered not only as a gifted footballer of a wartime generation, but also as a respected and dedicated doctor in his hometown.

Béla Farkaš holds a special place in the history of Novi Bečej football—as a symbol of talent, sportsmanship, and a generation that managed to leave a lasting legacy despite the hardships of its time.
