He graduated from the higher pedagogical academy and for many years worked as a teacher and then as the long-standing principal of the "Miloje Čiplić" Elementary School in Novi Bečej.
Imre was an excellent organizer and a measured and kind-hearted school principal, loved by the children and respected by his colleagues at the school. Everyone respected him as a great hard worker and a thoughtful leader and organizer of every endeavor.
The school building had not been seriously repaired or maintained for over fifty years until Imre convinced the authorities that an almost complete reconstruction of the building was necessary to keep it in usable condition for many years to come. The basement and foundations threatened by groundwater were repaired, and the building's carpentry (windows and doors) was almost entirely replaced, making the school today a pride of Novi Bečej.
The name of Principal Levai will also be remembered because of two significant recognitions that the "Miloje Čiplić" School received during his tenure. The school was the first in Vojvodina to receive the Vuk Award from the Cultural and Educational Community of Serbia and the October Award from the Novi Bečej Municipal Assembly.
Imre dedicated his great work energy and intellectual strength entirely to Novi Bečej and its children. Culture as a life choice did not stem from his profession as an educator but was his love, his inner - nature-inspired - life. Hence his effort to provide additional cultural content to Novi Bečej, primarily to the children of Novi Bečej.
He ended his working career as the secretary of the SIZ for social care and child protection, where he initiated the construction of a kindergarten and a building for children's daycare. With his gentle and kind nature, many socially disadvantaged people found a true interlocutor in him. Although he was not always able to help every petitioner in a satisfactory manner, his humane and warm words inspired the disadvantaged with hope and faith that everything possible was done under the circumstances.
Imre was noble in his dealings with people in general and had a special love and respect for his mother.
For his tireless and conscientious work, he was decorated, awarded, and praised.
