Mihalj Mesaroš – FK Partizan Legend from Novi Bečej

Mihalj Mesaroš was born in Novi Bečej in 1935, in an era when dreams were shaped on dusty football pitches and the game itself was played more with the heart than for reward. His first steps toward the wider world were taken in Zrenjanin, from where, at only eighteen years of age, his exceptional talent carried him further than he could have imagined — straight into the ranks of FK Partizan.

It was an era of great names and even greater stories: Stjepan Bobek, Miloš Milutinović, Mihalj Mesaroš, Čajkovski, Bruno Belin — names that still echo like a gentle reminder of football’s golden days.

His journey later continued in Greece, and then across the ocean. In 1967, Mesaroš became part of a newly formed professional football league in the United States, modeled after the European system, where he played a pioneering role in the development of the sport on the North American continent. With experience and knowledge carried from Europe, he successfully played for several clubs, including Los Angeles Toros, San Diego Toros, and San Jose Earthquakes, where he brought his remarkable football career to a close.

He spent the rest of his life in the United States, surrounded by what mattered most — family. Together with his wife Rozalija, his children Lidia and Robert, and his grandchildren Anthony, Christopher, Brianna, and John Michael, he lived quietly, far from the spotlight, yet forever close to memories that never fade.

Because some footballers never truly leave the pitch — they remain woven into the time we remember for its beauty.
