Sava Baračkov – Serbian Scenographer, Painter, and Visual Artist

Sava Baračkov was born in 1929 in Kumane, Banat, where he completed elementary school. He attended construction and architectural secondary schools in Novi Bečej, Petrovgrad, and Novi Sad. In 1955, he graduated from the Department of Scenography at the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade, under the mentorship of Professor Milenko Šerban.

From 1954 until his retirement in 1991, he worked as a scenographer at the Joakim Vujić Theatre. Between 1962 and 1967, he also served as the theatre’s director. During his prolific career, he created more than two hundred stage designs.

He was a guest scenographer in numerous theatres across the former Yugoslavia, including those in Užice, Šabac, Novi Sad, Sombor, Belgrade, Podgorica, Vršac, Leskovac, Mostar, Split, and Bydgoszcz, as well as in amateur theatres in Kraljevo, Jagodina, Priboj, Nova Varoš, Gornji Milanovac, and others. He collaborated with many distinguished permanent and guest directors from Belgrade and other cities, such as Petar Govedarević, Dušan Mihailović, Dušan Dobrović, Jovan Bulajić, Miodrag Gajić, Jovan Gligorijević, Rajko Stojadinović, Dimitrije Đurković, Josip Lešić, Boško Pištalo, Dejan Mijač, Miroslav Belović, Radivoje Lola Đukić, Aleksandar Đorđević, Dragan Jakovljević, Rajko Rakićević, and others.

In addition to scenography, Baračkov engaged in costume design, painting, graphics, and other visual arts. He took part in numerous group exhibitions and held solo scenography exhibitions in Kragujevac (1975 and 1992), as well as in Belgrade and Novi Sad (1993).

He received many awards and recognitions, including prizes at the Joakim Vujić Theatre Meetings (1965, 1966, 1969, 1980, and 1989), the Sterija’s Theatre Festival (1972), the Honorary Diploma of Kragujevac (1968), the October Award of Novi Bečej (1975), awards from the Cultural and Educational Community of Kragujevac (1975 and 1990), the Golden Badge of the Cultural and Educational Community of Serbia (1981), the Order of Labor with a Silver Wreath (1974), and the Joakim Vujić Statuette (1994).
