The development of water management in Vojvodina, Banat, and our Novi Bečej region is presented in the following exposition as a report, or more precisely, a story about water and what people have created by living and working on and around water over the past 150 years.
As previously highlighted, the demand for a unified approach to solving water management issues in the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem led, on January 1, 1963, to the incorporation of water associations from the Banat and Bačka regions into the Directorate for the Construction of the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem in Novi Sad.
In early 1992, following the adoption of the Serbian Water Law, three public water management companies were established across the territory of Republic of Serbia, covering the entire country. These companies are:
In the final years before the outbreak of the Second World War, a need emerged in Novi Bečej for the establishment of a new football club that would bring together working-class and artisan youth. At that time, Football Club Zvezda already had a stable squad and was, to some extent, closed to the admission of new players from these social groups. As a result, in 1940, a group of young men—mostly of Hungarian origin—founded Sports Club Napredak.
The memories of the people who surrounded me in my hometown are especially dear. Many of them have long passed away, but the beautiful memories remain, and I fondly and respectfully remember them.
Although I lived with my parents on a farm near Novi Bečej, on the road to Kumane, all my close friends during those childhood years were from Vranjevo. Thanks to their stories, I fell in love with certain parts, or rather places, of the Vranjevo field more than with those of Novi Bečej, and I was eager to get to know them better.
Sometimes, enchanted by the magic of summer evenings, sitting on the benches of the embankment, we would decide to share our joy with those who were not with us that night. And so, we would make the decision to perform a serenade for one of our dear friends or a charming guest.
In those frequent walks, I would go, in my thoughts, to the Great Warehouse, pondering its antiquity (built in 1780) and all it had endured over time.
The first organization of agricultural workers in Kumane was founded in the late 19th century. According to the memories of the oldest residents of Kumane, its first leader was a young wheelwright, Rada Sokolović, who was expelled from Pakrac as a well-known agitator of socialist ideas.
A considerable amount of time had passed since our trip to Šumica before we embarked on a new adventure to Matejski Brod. We were eagerly waiting for Voja Glavaški to get a bicycle so that the three of us could ride together. This anticipation lasted almost until the end of the school year. Voja finally got a Vesta-brand bicycle, just like mine, but his was newer and more stylish by two years.
Until 1955, kindergartens were part of schools. There were four groups in Serbian (2 groups in Vranjevo and 2 groups in Novi Bečej) and two groups in Hungarian (1 in Šušanj and 1 in the center of Novi Bečej). On September 1, 1955, the kindergarten became independent, with its own administration, and began to focus exclusively on the problems of managing and developing its groups.
A large number of polluters have been registered across Vojvodina. Industrial pollution is the most dominant, followed by pollution from agriculture and livestock production, as well as pollution originating from settlements. Additional pressure comes from many smaller sources — villages without sewage systems, agricultural land, and small livestock farms.
Tivadar Košut, a world-renowned naïve painter, was born in 1947 in Novi Bečej. He inherited his love for painting from his mother, who painted icons. Although his parents wanted him to become a carpenter or a ceramicist, art ultimately became his true calling.
As part of presenting the role of farmsteads in the lives of our fellow citizens from the not-so-distant past, it is useful to describe the general appearance of a farmstead yard, along with the arrangement of buildings and rooms within them. This is even more relevant because village house yards were similar in layout, making this account valuable for documentation purposes as well.
Between 1947 and 1957, research, geodetic surveys, studies, and conceptual designs were carried out.
From 1957 to 1977, main designs were developed and the basic canal network was constructed. The works were carried out under variable conditions, and the difficulties encountered caused delays and slowed down construction.
The stage — the “boards that mean the world” — has been a lifelong inspiration for Saša Milenković, an actor, director, and passionate theater devotee who has dedicated his life to the art of performance.
Born in 1963, Saša stepped onto the theatrical scene in 1978 and has remained actively involved ever since, contributing immensely to the cultural and artistic life of Novi Bečej and beyond.
Laza Telečki (1839—1873) made his debut at the National Theater (SNP) on Sunday, June 10/22, 1862, in the lead role of Avakum in the comedic play Better to Know than to Have by Jovan Ristić Bečkerec. "This play, which lacks a distinct plot, gained much through excellent performance," wrote the Danica journal on June 20.
Perhaps the reason must be invented
Perhaps the relation between the idea and its conventional realization in traditional painting techniques, as well as the relation between such an image and its photocopy (which contains additions from photographs and objects), can be measured—perhaps even considered identical.
In his manuscript “The Great Swimming Day,” Branislav Kiselički writes about the start of the competition on August 29, 1943:
In the harsh conditions of the economic crisis — especially in a year when it reached its peak — the football enthusiasts of Novi Bečej, or perhaps even better described as fanatics, organized a true football spectacle in 1932. That year, they managed to bring the multiple national champion, the Belgrade Sports Club (BSK), to Novi Bečej.
In his secular life, Nedeljko Iličić was born on November 6, 1906, in Novi Bečej to father Nedeljko and mother Sofija (née Tucakov). After completing primary school in his hometown, he attended high school in Veliki Bečkereki, and after graduating from the Theological Seminary in Sremski Karlovci, he obtained his degree from the Theological Faculty in Belgrade as a student of Bishop Georgije Letić of Timișoara.
The Obznana was the response of the bourgeoisie to the growing strength and influence of the Communist Party. Its goal was to secure the position of the bourgeoisie and the monarchy while preventing any legal activity of communists and the working class in general.
Drinking in front of stores in Serbia is not just a custom – it’s an institution! It dates back to the first store and the first bottle of rakija – essentially, since the dawn of time. Even the old craftsmen in the Ottoman period would take a “merak break,” drinking in front of shops while debating if it would rain.
The theatrical work of Jovan Knežević is mostly known in fragments, particularly from the time he founded his renowned theatre troupe in the autumn of 1860. At that time, with the political climate shifting in Hungary and greater political freedoms and autonomy being granted (the so-called October Diploma of 1860), an active theatrical life among Serbs was revived after a decade of Bach’s absolutist repression.
Responsibility, ambition, and dedication marked the life and career of Dr. Milorad Drobac, Doctor of Economic Sciences.
He was born on February 11, 1948, in Bočar, where he completed elementary school as the top student of his class.
This image shows the appearance of Novi Bečej in the late 1910s, with a focus on its Main Street — at the time, the central axis of everyday life, trade, education, and religion. On the left side, we see the prominent building of the state school, one of the cornerstones of the town’s modernization. This institution served not only as a place of learning but also as a space for shaping the collective identity of a diverse population.
Until the outbreak of the Second World War, football in Novi Bečej was burdened by severe financial difficulties, even when it came to meeting the most basic needs. Above all, Novi Bečej lacked an industrial base from which any form of material support for football clubs could have been expected.

After two open solo-vocal competitions (1995 and 1997) and two invitational composition contests (1996 and 1998), the organizers of “Horizons on the Tisa” planned the seventh edition of the event with great ambition.
After the Obznana proclamation of 1920, the authorities banned the activities of SKOJ, the revolutionary youth organization of the working class, which also gathered a significant number of rural young people. Despite frequent police raids and arrests, the organization was re-established in Kuman in 1923 and continued to operate illegally until the dictatorship of 1929.
"The Formation, Development, and Destruction of the Jewish Community in Novi Bečej" is the title of an extensive work created through the years of effort by Branislav-Bata Kiselički. As he explains in the introductory notes, the author approached this monumental task due to his sense of duty and obligation to his Jewish friends from his youth, and later to their fellow countrymen who lived in Novi Bečej in the near and distant past.
