Among the main economic sectors of the municipality, agriculture and industry dominate, while in recent years increasing attention has been directed toward transportation, trade, hospitality, and tourism.
Agriculture consists of crop and livestock production. About 75% of the territory is arable land, which forms the basis of crop farming. This production is primarily characterized by the cultivation of grains, followed by industrial crops, vegetables, and fruits. Until the 1930s, Novi Bečej was one of the most important centers for exporting grain from Banat to much of Europe.
On the estate of Count Rohonci, located on the Pearl Island (Biserno ostrvo), the famous “Pearl of the Tisa” melons were once cultivated, as well as the renowned imperial wine “Krokan.” While the melons are no longer produced, the agricultural estate “Sokolac” continues to successfully market its exclusive “Krokan” wine both in Serbia and across Europe (Bajić, 1983).
A key driver of the municipality’s economic development is the Building Ceramics Industry “Polet,” one of the best-known manufacturers of roof tiles and ceramics in the country. Year after year, “Polet” expands its production capacities, opens new facilities, and strengthens its position in both domestic and international markets.
Alongside agriculture and industry, trade and transportation are gaining increasing importance, while tourism is considered a sector with significant potential for further development (Lazić L., Stojanović V., Pavić D., Ivkov Džigurski A., Blažin N., 2010).
